What are VCXOs?

VCXO stands for “Voltage Controlled Crystal Oscillators”.

These oscillators are used in electronics to generate a periodic signal with high stability and accuracy that is also tunable. This stability and accuracy of the oscillator allow it to provide a stable clock signal for digital integrated circuits so that they can be used for timekeeping in various technological applications, such as telecommunications, data transmission, and frequency synthesis.

The frequency of the oscillator is varied using a variable capacitance (varicap) diode used in reverse bias. This tunes the resonance of the crystal circuit slightly away from the resonance of the crystal.
